Name came from presidential nominee Lewis Cass in 1848
Cass Township was created in 1848 and named after Lewis Cass, a minister to France, a U.S. senator and Democratic candidate for the presidency in 1848.

Citizens living in what was then Branch Township supported Cass during his political campaign against Gen. Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore.

Many nationalities settled Cass Township while seeking work in coal mining. They include the Irish, Welsh, Scottish, Polish, Lithuanians, Greeks and Italians. The township is part of Minersville Area School District. It is host to Big Diamond Raceway and includes the beautiful Heckscherville Valley.
