The busy Schuylkill Valley Railroad once traversed this small community
Another Schuylkill Valley community, Middleport is just east of New Philadelphia.

Historical accounts report Adam Stahl as the first settler in the area, halfway between Tamaqua and Pottsville along the former Schuylkill Valley Railroad and, today, Route 209. Stahlxs descendants later became major landowners in the area.

Borough council first met on May 2, 1859.
