Located at the intersection of Routes 209 and 901, just outside of Minersville, is the Coal Miners Statue. Along with chunks of anthracite, some shrubbery, memorial bricks and sidewalks, this testimonial serves as a tribue to the Anthracite miner and to the coal-mining legacy for which the community was named.
Noted for its beautiful churches, Minersville is Schuylkill Countyxs fifth-largest borough. It has a downtown that is often bustling, particularly with Route 901 traffic funneling through it. In the 1800s and early 1900s, that same road, Sunbury Street, was a primary route from Reading to Sunbury.
Formed from Branch and Norwegian townships, Minersville was incorporated as a borough in 1831. While first settled in 1793 by Thomas Reed, the area remained sparsely populated until the opening of the first mining operation in 1818. From there, it grew significantly. The population was 1,265 by 1840 and increased to 9,392 by 1930 as the anthracite industry neared its peak.
