Named for English coal town
Formed from Norwegian Township in 1847, New Castle was named for a coal town in England.

The township stretches from Saint Clair north to include part of the area of the Schuylkill Mall near Frackville and a small strip of Interstate 81.

New Castle, which has a long mining history, remains the site of extensive strip mining today.
