Borough men played unique role in nation's medical history
Saint Clair, settled by farmer Michael Boechtel and named for Saint Clair Nicholas of the noted Nicholas family, has several notable links to the medical profession.
Native Joel T. Boone was personal physician for presidents Harding, Coolidge and Hoover; and Dr. Claude Beck, also born and raised in Saint Clair, was the first surgeon to perform open-heart surgery in America.
The borough’s first street was laid out in 1831. Saint Clair became a borough on May 9, 1850. Its principal industry was coal.

Interestingly, the borough is one of only two municipalities in Schuylkill County that maintains its own electric department (the other is Schuylkill Haven).

  • The John Siney Park on Hancock Street recognizes the founder of the Workingmen’s Benevolent Association, the forerunner of today’s United Mine Workers union. A key meeting was held at Walker’s Hall (today the site of Da Bar), Third and Carroll streets.
  • GAR Monument at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, McCord Avenue, honors Civil War veterans.
