Famous inclined plane is part of legacy

Chartered in 1873, Gilberton consists of three sections: Gilberton (to the east), Maizeville (central), Mahanoy Plane (west) and Planefield (North).

Mahanoy Plane was named for the world-renowned incline plane that connected the Mill Creek Railway with the Mahanoy and Shamokin branch of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad. There are recent discussions of recreating parts of that engineering marvel for tourist promotion.
