Town is named for millionaire land owner

In 1832, Philadelphia philanthropist Stephen Girard developed large tracts of land to build a railroad; the site of Girardville is on one of these tracts. In 1862, Girardville had 100 inhabitants. Ten collieries were opened within a few miles of the settlement, spurring growth that resulted in the town becoming a borough in 1872.

The Hibernian House on Beech Street was once the meeting place of the Molly Maguires, an alleged Irish-American secret labor society that battled with coal operators in the 1860s and ’70s.
