Noted for abundant reservoirs, prison
Formed from Rush Township in 1849, its first settler came to the area in 1791. Coal mining has been the primary industry.

The township surrounds Mahanoy City and has an abundance of reservoirs in its northern area. It also is home to the State Correctional Institution/ Mahanoy, one of two state prisons in the county.
