Home to Locust Lake, area was settled in 1780s
In 1868, Ryan Township was formed from Rush and Mahanoy townships and named in honor of Judge James Ryan of Pottsville.

The first settlers are said to have arrived as early as 1784 when David Dresh built a log cabin. The township is home to Locust Lake State Park.
