Anthracite mining once made Shenandoah the most populated community in America for its geographic size, with nearly 30,000 inhabitants in the late 1920s.
That mining heritage has not been forgotten despite the industry’s decline. The community in 1996 unveiled the Pennsylvania Anthracite Miner’s Memorial at Girard Park, a three-panel, high-relief bronze artwork paying tribute to the thousands who toiled in eastern Pennsylvania’s coal mines.
The land that Shenandoah occupies today was originally owned by Peter Kehley in the mid-1830s.
