West Mahanoy is a township that features urban-like qualities, rural beauty and a coal mining legacy. The township also shares borders with Frackville, Shenandoah and Gilberton.

Formed out of Mahanoy Township in 1874, its larger villages include Shenandoah Heights and Altamont. Early mining spawned many other small communities, such as Lost Creek.
