Mills were an early claim to fame
Located to the east of Route 61 near Pottsville, the borough was incorporated in 1854 but was laid out 10 years earlier.

The borough was noted for its extensive rolling mills, built in 1854-55 by William Harris and in 1863 by Benjamin Haywood.

The Philadelphia & Reading Railroad also had a roundhouse and repair shops at Palo Alto.
The borough was named for the battle of Palo Alto in the Mexican War.
