Borough was starting point for Schuylkill Canal
Port Carbon was laid out between 1821 and 1828 by John Pott, the founder of Pottsville. An early industry dates to 1865.

The northernmost point on the former Schuylkill Canal, Port Carbon was the origin for the transport of thousands of tons of anthracite coal to Philadelphia.

It was incorporated as a borough in April 1852.
