County seat serves as hub of government
The Pottsville name travels across the country with perhaps its most noted product: beer and ale from D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc., America's Oldest Brewery.

One of Pottsville's most famous native sons is best-selling novelist John O'Hara (1905-70), whose books served as the basis for several Hollywood scripts, including "Butterfield 8," for which Elizabeth Taylor won an Academy Award.

The city was also home to the Pottsville Maroons, who in 1925 were good enough to win the National Football League championship, only to be stripped of it in a move that remains controversial.

Pottsville is a hub of activity, from the Schuylkill County Courthouse and state and federal agency offices to industry and retail business.

The city takes its name from John Pott, who came here in 1806 and purchased a furnace to smelt iron at the former "Island," near the present Schuylkill Medical Plaza.
