Name was derived from a poem
This small Southern Stretch community takes its name from Oliver Goldsmith’s poem, "The Deserted Village." It became a borough in 1857.

A historical marker recognizes Fort Lebanon, erected about 1755. Under command of Capt. Jacob Morgan, the fort burned and more than 100 people were captured by Indians.

Three locks of the Schuylkill Canal were located in Auburn in the mid 1800s.
