Before
summer cottages went up on the shores of man-made Deer Lake, the area was
farmland. Later developed as Deer Lake in the Pines, it became a busy summer
tourist spot from the 1920s-’60s. People came not only for outdoor recreation,
but for the Broadway stars and other entertainers who performed there.
