"The Little Town That Could", Schuylkill Haven's history was built upon the canal and railroad transportation of coal. Its name comes from a "haven", or point of shipment, and "hidden stream".
As one of the county's larger boroughs, and with Penn State Schuylkill near its southern boundary and Route 61 funneling through it, Schuylkill Haven is a key community in Schuylkill County.
Jacob Dreibelbis laid out the town in 1811, but the founding is dated at 1750 by Mratin Dreibelbis. Construction of the Schuylkill Canal began in 1816 and ran through the center of town. Commerical trade on the canal was eventually replaced by the railways. This history has lead to the proposal of a railroading museum on "The Island" in the borough.
