 The calm waters of what’s left of the Union Canal today represent a place for recreation and relaxation in the community.
When its construction was completed in 1828, the canal became an important link between the coal fields of the Swatara Creek Valley and the Susquehanna River at Middletown. By 1830, the canal also opened between Pine Grove and Philadelphia. The borough became an important shipping center during the early days of mining because of the canal and access to railroad terminals.
Another important Pine Grove distinction comes thanks to the writings of Conrad Richter. Born in the borough, he wrote 14 novels and won a Pulitzer Prize in Letters in 1951. The borough, formed from Pine Grove Township in 1843, today has a mix of manufacturing and agriculture that support the area’s economy.
