One of the early settlements in what is now Schuylkill County, Pine Grove Township — like the borough — takes its name from a grove of tall pine trees.
The township is home to the 34-foot-tall Swatara Furnace, built in 1830. It was used to make stoves, utensils, chains and tools until 1861. The furnace is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The natural beauty of the area is highlighted by Sweet Arrow Lake.
