The township ranges from the mountanious coal-mining region in the east to the valley area surrounding Tower City.

The township takes its name from Schuylkill County Judge David R. Porter. It was separated from Lower Mahantongo Township in 1840.

Peters Mountain divided the area into two valleys, Williams and Clarks.
