Washington Township was carved out of Wayne and Pine Grove townships in 1856. The first settler is believed to have been Philip Snell, who owned a 300-acre tract in the northeast section of the township in the late 1760s.
The Swatara Creek provided a home for gristmills and sawmills throughout the region. The township, named for President George Washington, is home to the county’s two remaining covered bridges, the Zimmerman and Rock bridges, both near the village of Rock.
